US boxer Hannah Rapp, who recently contended for the World Boxing Council (WBC) women’s featherweight championship, tragically died Saturday after a motorist struck her while she was cycling in Texas. Authorities confirmed the incident, leading to the arrest of a 31-year-old man.

Fatal Incident Under Investigation

The Brazos County Sheriff's Office identified the victim as 26-year-old Rapp and the arrested individual as Charles Medina. Deputies stated Rapp and another cyclist were riding on a local road when Medina, having passed them, abruptly stopped his car and then reversed, striking Rapp. She was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after emergency responders arrived. Medina faces a manslaughter charge, which under Texas law involves recklessly causing a person's death. The sheriff's office indicated the "isolated" case remains under active investigation, offering no further immediate details. This tragic event, as it happens, underscores the inherent dangers cyclists face on public roads.

Boxing Community Mourns a Champion

News of Rapp’s untimely death prompted an outpouring of grief from the professional boxing community. Mauricio Sulaimán, WBC president, expressed profound sorrow, stating Rapp was "an exceptional boxer" and "an invaluable member of our boxing family." He extended condolences to her loved ones and team. Rapp, a Yorktown, Indiana native, had an impressive professional record of eight victories, five by knockout, and one draw across her first nine bouts. Her tenth fight saw her challenge Tiara Brown for the WBC 126lb world title, a match Brown won by unanimous decision. Brown herself paid tribute on social media, calling Rapp "the best dance partner I have ever faced as a pro" and an honor to share the ring with. Medina, whose bond amount was not immediately set, remained in custody, with jail records revealing prior arrests for offenses including deadly conduct and reckless driving. Conviction for manslaughter could result in a prison sentence of two to twenty years.
